But before we get there, what's the story behind the story? Daniel, what got you from where you were to where you are today?
Daniel Ebbett: Yeah. Thanks Jeffrey. Thanks for having me. Really excited to share with your audience all about my story about light and health and how people can really start to have an awareness how light does impact our biology and how we can actually harness that to improve our health and our energy.
For me, this story actually starts about 11 years ago now, 11, 12 years ago. I was studying at university, I grew up in New Zealand studying at university in New Zealand and in the early days of university like most people did, a lot of partying. Didn't really take your health so seriously.
It was kind of. mean, that was the time in my life where you're enjoying life. But, and also trying to [00:06:00] study at the same time. But towards the end of my studies, I was doing a four year degree. I, in the last year, I thought to myself, I probably should start to consider like my health and like just, I want to perform well, I want to feel well.
I'm about to kick off into the working world to start off my career. I I wanna hit the ground running. Like I've got big ambitious goals that I want do. So I really started to take health quite seriously. And when I say take health quite seriously, I mean my knowledge of that back then was, Hey, let's start exercising.
Let's go to the gym. And they start eating healthy. that's all I really considered that was health. But I got really into it. Within a year I was actually competing in power lifting at a national level. 'cause I really got into, weight training and strength training.
And I got a job, a graduate position with a large insurance group on the, 25th floor of an office building fluorescent lights, all, through the building. my chosen career path was in IT.
Spending a lot of time indoors, I was going to work, spending a lot of time under fluorescent lighting on screens all day. leave the office, go to the [00:07:00] gym, train for a couple hours again under artificial lighting, and then come home and then log back on to do work at 11:00 PM at night.
And under lighting, under the screens and within the space of probably, I'm gonna say six weeks, six weeks to two months, I developed severe insomnia and I was getting severe migraine attacks during the day. And for me, this is completely fine. I used to just I don't know, I never even really considered the idea of sleep optimization or even like trying to sleep it. I just, I used to go to sleep and then wake up and just start my day and suddenly I would go to sleep and I would wake up a couple hours later and then I can couldn't get back to sleep. and that rinse and repeat this constantly, where I just continued to have the poorest quality sleep, waking through the night which over a longer period of time started to cause a lot of hormonal dysregulation where my cortisol patterns were outta whack.
My testosterone was starting to drop. my body was breaking down. I was trying to push it in the gym still. Like I didn't really understand the concept of, hey, you can [00:08:00] actually stress the body too much, You need to actually back off like. I thought I was a little bit bulletproof when I was younger.
And again, I thought I was still doing all the right things for health. 'cause I was like, Hey, I'm exercising and I'm eating well. So, and when I'm been eating well, just make sure, I don't know, like broccoli and uh, chicken breasts, Just like the typical bodybuilders kind of diet.
And what I realize now, I was like, actually training was probably the worst thing I could have done, right? I needed to back off. My body was sudden with so much stress that, it wasn't sleeping, wasn't recovering. And in my mind I was like, oh, maybe I'm getting unhealthy. I'm, I feel sick.
I've got a low mood, I've got low energy. Maybe I need to actually do all these things more. Maybe I need to train harder and diet more. Which was actually, like I needed less of those things. My body was needing to actually try not to lower it. Stress. So I did anyway, I did what most people would do that I went to my doctor and I was like, I can't sleep.
And I'm, during the day, I'm so sensitive to light. I need to go into dark rooms and I can't stand being on a screen for too long. And [00:09:00] under that traditional medical route was like how can we, here's your symptoms. What can we use to, let's not worry about what's actually causing them what can we do to stop, just to bandaid those symptoms. And that essentially led me down a path of a full year of back and forth to the GP where they prescribed me a whole different cocktail of different prescription medications from standard sleeping tablets to off-label, anti-psychotic medications, antidepressants all, a whole host of these different kind of drugs.
And ultimately none of them really worked. They actually made me feel worse. Yes, some of them would knock me out per se, but then I'd just wake up feeling like, like I'm, I didn't get restorative sleep. I just feel like I was unconscious for eight hours, and then eventually they got to a point where the doctors said there's nothing wrong with you. It's in your head. There's nothing physically wrong with you. You're fine. And I couldn't believe that was like the Deep Wealth where we give up. And I was like well, I don't give up. 'cause I knew what it felt like to feel good, and I couldn't really even [00:10:00] do my day job anymore. It was really starting to have an impact on my career, my ability to function in life. But I guess I, I'm quite stubborn and I wasn't prepared to just take that as okay, well I guess that's is what it is I need to carry on with life.
We got to the point, we tried all the bandaids didn't work, and we're not actually gonna sit there and look at what the actual root cause was. So I took it upon myself to just try and find and learn and understand. I stumbled upon a neurosurgeon based in the US called Dr. Jack Cruz. His concepts were that most people got it wrong. Everyone's so fixated on what diet they need to be on.
Is it a ketogenic diet? Is it a paleo diet, is a vegan, or, everyone's debating what the ultimate. What we should be consuming for food to reach this peak level of health or get us out of sickness. And he is they've got it all wrong. Ultimately what governs our biology so much more than what we eat is light.
And the life environment we're in, where we've evolved is human [00:11:00] beings under the sun. The sun gives life to earth. And there's, there is day and night cycles and where most of us are living in a world now where we're not honoring our biology and how the type of light it's supposed to be in.
We are living in a very artificially lit world now. And ultimately a lot of our mood, energy hormones are all governing, regulated through life cycles.
I started to look at my own environment. I'm not going outdoors anymore. I'm on screens and getting significant exposure to artificial light spectrums that don't mimic nature at all and are will be significantly impacting my hormones and when they're being secreted at the wrong day, times of day and night.
So I started to play around with those concepts. In the early days I got a set of safety glasses that would filter particular spectrums of light so I could wear them to essentially hack the system around like making sure I wasn't [00:12:00] telling my brain it's, a certain day, time of the day when it wasn't.
Fast forward to today, there could be like blocking glasses, but over 11 years ago they didn't have a name. But you know, there's a brand of safety glasses that would do that job. So I was literally rocking these big ugly glasses in the office. The things we do for health and I didn't really care at this point what people thought.
But that's kind of what led me down this journey of really looking at biology light and how the two interact for me. Within the space of a month, I was starting to sleep better. Within the space of two months, I was sleeping through the night. I had no longer had migraine attacks. I was essentially, reversing 12 months worth of sleep deprivation, hormonal dysregulation.
And within the space of probably four to five months, I was back at a full suite of health. But for me at a very basic level saying, put these glasses on, go outside.
And that's what it actually made a difference. I was just really blown away that how can it be in a way so simple, but no one knows [00:13:00] about it? I can't be the only one. Like I wasn't living in a lifestyle that was so far. Off what other people would be doing and their lifestyles.
You get to a point where people just normalize how they feel, right? And they just move on with life and so once I was able to, understand that really pick that apart and reverse my own health conditions and feel great again, I had sparked this desire to be like, why I can help other people. why is no one talking about this? And so that led me to initially going the glasses purchased off Amazon, they were like $20, and they made such a big impact. And just, I thought I, I would love to just, I. Start a platform, educate people and sell them some glasses. That's how Bock Blue Light was born. Yeah, it was a very challenging time at the start because, it was a concept no one really could understand.
We weren't really, we're back in 2005 at this point the digital age was just starting to evolve. Not everyone had smart phones. We didn't have big LED, big screen TVs. LED [00:14:00] lighting in the residential home wasn't really so spread through, it was incandescent lining still existed.
So the problem wasn't as nearly bad as it is today that it's affecting everyone. And obviously, and at the same time people were coming into awareness of this, I would say it started with health biohackers that were really into how they can optimize their health we were around selling these glasses. Then about three years into the business, so I had a, just a very basic suite of products just to basic, some different glasses you could wear. Primarily the concept of glasses was to use 'em at nighttime.
And the reason we would put on the glasses at nighttime was the concept of how light impacts our biology. One of the biggest ones blue light from our environment, EG the sun. So the sun is our main source of natural light, and it's the only source of natural blue light.
It's present during the daytime. That light comes into our eyes. We have some receptors in our eyes called melanopsin receptors. we've got two lots of receptors in [00:15:00] our eyes. Receptors in our eyes. That light comes in and that translates signals through what are called rods and cones to, to give us eyesight so we can see.
But we've got what we call non-photo receptors, so they're. Receptors that they're called melanopsin receptors, they also respond to light, but there's nothing to do with your vision. It's purely around the sink of your body clock or your circadian rhythm. So regulating the time of the day in your body so your body knows when it's nighttime and what processes and what hormones it should be excreting based on the time of day and night.
So it's using those receptors and the light signals coming into them to regulate that. So blue light is most present during the daytime. So what happens is during the daytime blue light into the receptors tells your body it's daytime, so it will secrete wakefulness hormones like cortisol and adrenaline to levels to keep you awake alert. Things like serotonin and dopamine are regulated through this, these light signals as well, which regulate your mood and energy levels. So essentially [00:16:00] light coming in during the day, it's keeping you awake, alert, happy, full of energy. Now in nature, the sun sets, sun goes down. And then ancestrally, what do we use for light sources in the evening?
That's fire. So fire doesn't have blue light and it doesn't have green light, and it's just spectrums of yellow, orange, and red. So we've evolved over millions of years and so our biology isn't really set up to be exposed to blue or green light in the evenings. We're supposed to have fires, a dimly lit.
Very deep, red, yellow, and orange. Now, when the sun sets, most people don't live in the dark. Most people will turn on light sources in their house, and when they turn on all the lights in their home, they're like mini suns. They emit very high levels of blue light. And so, that's, and when I say blue light, it's translated as white light essentially that is in our home to create white light.
They use a lot of the blue light spectrum to do [00:17:00] that. So essentially the sun sets, you turn on these lights on your home, so you can see, and then your ancestral brain and your ancestral biology systems go well, based on that spectrum. It's solar noon, your circadian clock goes, I operate and sink my clock based on light signals and the light signals I'm getting.
Tell me that the sun is up and it's probably about midday. So what happens then is based on that, it's if it's midday, I need to be secreting these wakefulness hormones. I need to keep the, I need to keep the system awake and alert. Which causes a whole big host of problems. Because at nighttime you should be doing the opposite.
You should, you saying to wind down, relax, and get yourself the body's preparing for sleep, a restorative phase where it goes into rest to restore and repair overnight. And the way it does that is the absence of blue light will lower, our cortisol levels will drop down quite low. Cortisols are wakefulness hormone.
So as adrenaline, those will drop right down. Now, when those hormones drop down, that allows [00:18:00] an opposing hormone to rise, which is called melatonin. So melatonin is known as a sleep hormone. So it's produced in the guts, produced in the pineal gland in the brain. It secretes itself in the absence of blue light, in the absence of cortisol, it rises and it helps us, helps the brain relax, helps the body relax. It helps the body go into a deep restorative sleep through the night. But it's not only a sleep hormone, it's also one of the most powerful the body produces.
Why is that important? Because as you're sleeping and going through your restorative phase flooding the body with melatonin, a very potent antioxidant helps clean up and, repair and restore the body at this cellular level, right? So it's free radical damage that's occurred during the day.
It's like cellular repair. So it's helping clean up anti-cancer, it's anti-inflammatory. It's such an important hormone that your body. Users while you're sleeping. So I [00:19:00] know this is why people call it the sleep moment. I'm like, it's so much more important just for longevity, for health for, for whilst you are sleeping, that the mechanisms of what that actual hormone is doing.
And so what's happening with, we're suppressing our melatonin significantly by putting all these lights on in our home that are emitting blue light, telling ourselves it's daytime. There's studies showing that melatonin levels are suppressed by, over 80% of natural melatonin is suppressed by delaying the onset of it, essentially by having blue light present.
A lot of people will either sit there wondering why they can't sleep because they're either being exposed to so much lighting in the evening, and now they're ready to go to sleep. And so what are people doing when they're wide awake? They grab their phone and look at their phone. and then the phone's emitting high for the blue light.
But eventually once it gets dark, melatonin secretion may start, it may take an extra four hours to come on. It's not getting, its ability to be in the body for the full, night full [00:20:00] rest. So your body can actually go for a full night of restorative sleep and go through a repair mechanisms.
So the glasses I created was selling, initially they block all of the blue light, so you put them on in the evenings whilst you could be, have all your overhead lights on. You could look at screens, but the blue light spectrum has been filtered through the glasses.
You can still see, but you've filtered out spectrums that are effectively telling your brain, your biology, that it's daytime. So now it can actually truly recognize that it's nighttime and these glasses will have a red or an orange tint on them it allows the, the red, yellow and orange light to come through, but it's actually filter out a large portion of the green spectrum in all of the blue spectrum. That's the whole premise behind the business and what I've created and what I was doing to manipulate, when I had health problems, that was the kind of the root cause of everything.
And then it was about utilizing tools like glasses, but being, having a really good awareness of hey, this is actually, this type of lighting is actually [00:21:00] having this impact on my biology.
Jeffrey Feldberg: So Daniel, my goodness, quite the journey. There's a huge story there to unpack. And I wanna say, and I'm gonna use two fancy words and Deep Wealth Nation, you've probably heard of this, and if you haven't, that's okay. The circadian rhythm, and Daniel, as you're sharing your story though, would you say that the root cause that one of the main factors or a number of factors from what you're sharing, but one of the main factors that had you feel unwell or dis-ease or whatever you wanna throw into the mix there it was that your body was getting the wrong kind of light at the wrong times, which ultimately ended up affecting your sleep and you're not sleeping well, you're waking up at the wrong times. You're getting up and you're now having bright lights when it should be no lights at all. You're on your computer, you're on your phone. And when you should have bright lights, you're not outside. You're at your computer but it's still light enough that it's confusing your body. The circadian rhythm, your body was confused. Is it nighttime? Is it daytime? I don't know. And it [00:22:00] put you into a downward spiral. So let's start with that.
How am I doing with that in terms of the root cause, the narrative?
Daniel Ebbett: Yeah. technical term would be a circadian rhythm dysregulation. And that's essentially what was happening with me. The body was very confused. It's used to rhythm, right? We work on 24 hour cycles. And when that rhythm gets disruptive, our body doesn't actually understand what's going on because evolution takes millions of years, we've evolved under the sun, we've evolved under light cycles of light and dark. And now suddenly just out of nowhere, it's been disruptive with these artificial light sources.
And the body was, for me, it was doing exactly what it was supposed to do. It's responding to light the way it's supposed to respond, which is causing a lot of health problems for me, but it doesn't know what else to do. It receives and signals of light and it secretes certain hormones and neurotransmitters based on that light.
But what that was doing is creating them in the wrong time of the day and night for me. [00:23:00] Secreting cortisol and the AT 3:00 AM for me is is the worst thing for anyone. It's just gonna. Boost them wide awake. But because, the biology systems in us have evolved over so long, it doesn't understand that the sun is no longer the only light source that we are around.
and that's why I say like these, we have artificial suns everywhere. We have artificial suns in our pockets, our phones, we have artificial suns that are all playing into what we call our circadian rhythm, affecting our, what I call circadian biology.
And the world we live in now, the modern world has changed that very rapidly and very fast from where we were even, 200 years ago. To where we are now is wildly different from the types of light we're being exposed to.
Jeffrey Feldberg: Daniel, your story on the health side, but also your story on the business side. I know they're intertwined and what I'm about to say. You can't really have one without the other, but it would be safe to say that if [00:24:00] you didn't figure out what was going on with your circadian rhythm dysregulation, or you're just sick, you weren't feeling well.
You wouldn't have a successful business today because the way that you were feeling, your lack of energy, your focus, you would not have been able to build the kind of business that you've done. And we're gonna talk about that momentarily with blocking blue light. And you are a data point of one at the time and you're way ahead of the curve.
You're really one of the trendsetters of saying, okay, hey, if I can't control my environment, if I can't change light bulbs or if I can't be outside when it's dark out, I have to be inside.
So you had a data point of one, you solve this for yourself. What was the point, or when did you know, Hey, this it can not only help me because it did help me, it brought me back to health. Why don't I start a business that's now gonna help other people in a similar position? Was there one specific Eureka moment? Was it a series of events? What was going on with that? I.
Daniel Ebbett: After I had researched it, understood the science [00:25:00] of it, applied that to myself, reversed my own health. I was just so passionate about it that, initially I didn't have, I actually had no desire to start it. I was like, oh, no, there's a business idea here.
I feel like there's something here to help people. That was how it all started. And I guess for me, like that's what's driven me all the way through the, from the point of inception of a business is what it was to today. The goal here is and the passion for me is to help people.
And I think there's a level of authenticity in the business that driven for the last 10 years from right down to all the staff we hire and the vision and the mission of what we do is to help people and is, and for me it's understanding. If I go back 10 years ago, yeah I thought this problem's gonna get worse.
I'm working in IT, I'm creating systems. I'm deploying systems, I'm watching technology evolve. I'm like, this problem's not going away. It's just gonna get significantly worse. So there is an [00:26:00] opportunity is what I thought. No one listened to me.
Everyone thought I was this crazy dude wearing these weird glasses. So, there was a little bit of persistence in sticking it out and going, it will change because we're in the infancy of technology and it's not affecting many people yet, but it's gonna start to infiltrate everyone's lifestyles and affect everyone.
And when that happens, people will start to listen more. And I think that's what I've watched over the last 10 years is, me sitting there screaming from the rooftops initially trying to get. functional doctors or naturopath. I was like, you guys should be, you should be like, I thought these people were the people that would understand.
But even then it was a very fringe concept that didn't make sense. And then fast forward, I've just watched it evolve, and it's quite cool when it makes me quite happy to see in today's world, it's the opposite, right? We've got tons of people reaching out to us, like the naturopath the sport coaches, everyone being like, we want to, be [00:27:00] involved with you.
We, we wanna promote your business, and I wouldn't even say this whole concept is far from mainstream. We're not in a mainstream adoption yet. I don't know if we'll ever get there, but it's gone from a very small subset of niche where, like I said, the real hardcore biohackers that just do everything and understand everything, go.
To improve their health. And it's just continue to slowly span further and further out to the likes of, through the functional medical systems and naturopaths. But then even things now it's hey, like sports teams are starting to consider this and I could go down the street now and probably just talk to people they would understand the concept of you probably shouldn't look at your phone before bed.
Now they might not understand the science behind it or what all the solutions are, but I think we're starting to get to an adoption point where the concept's not so crazy anymore. That people have an idea of it.
Jeffrey Feldberg: What's interesting about this speaking to you, the younger Daniel, [00:28:00] you're into technology. You're likely very linear thinking, and all of a sudden you're beginning to learn about hey, lighting something as quote-unquote, simple as lighting, that can be making a major negative impact on my health.
As I say that, Daniel, I'm thinking of members in Deep Wealth Nation and they're saying, yeah, Daniel, I hear you. That's a great story, but there's no way, there's absolutely no way that lighting or fluorescent lights or being inside when you should be outside, it could make you that sick, not buying that.
So why would you say to that person in Deep Wealth Nation who's coming at it from that perspective?
Daniel Ebbett: Yeah, that's an interesting one. The sciences. And that's a lot of what I get fascinated by. I don't just take someone's one experience and go well, that must apply to everyone, including myself. And there is a lot of research and that's what I spend a lot of time is diving into the academic literature and seeing what it was saying.
And the initial product I used wasn't one we created, it was just like, oh yeah, there's one that can remove a portion of blue [00:29:00] light. And I saw some benefits from it when we actually went to start creating products.
And so fast forward to today, it's an interesting one because you'll actually see studies that exist now that say, and very well respected medical journals will say, blue light blocking glasses don't work.
Because we've come into a world now where we have seen the idea of the concept of blue light glasses start to infiltrate through you've got cheap made in China with no kind of scientific backing. when something becomes quite popular, in business, you'll see a lot of opportunities go, I can make a quick buck off this is trending.
And now this is where things get interesting. 'cause I'm like, wow, okay. But I've got research that shows that they do work or sorry, I don't have research that says blue light blocking glasses work.
I've got research that talks about the concepts of light and what that impact is, and then what the impact is when you're not exposed to that light. It's not a research study on blue light blocking glasses per se. So I say well, the [00:30:00] science is there, the product in later research is saying it doesn't work, so it must be an issue with the product then.
So that's where I dive into the research of these new studies and go, okay, what are the lenses they're using? How did they determine what blue light blocking glasses don't work? And also I would say how can you say all blue light blocking glasses don't work?
'cause they've, that's such a generic term. You're saying, it's glasses that, that filter some form of light, blue light. That doesn't go down to the, what the research is talking about. So there's a core piece of research that I found that was done in 2001. And what I was looking at, it was looking at all spectrums of light.
So light's measured in nanometers. So that's how we measure wavelengths of light. And it looked at all the different wavelengths and it said, based on that what is the level of melatonin suppression based on different wavelengths? And so blue light is measured between 400, 500 nanometers. And then green light starts from 500 and goes through to 580. And then it carries on through the colors of the rainbow. And [00:31:00] this research showed that melatonin suppression the max the peak of melatonin suppression is at 465 nanometers.
So that's right in the smack bang near the middle of the blue light spectrum. But total melatonin suppression happens from 400 nanometers and it happens all the way through to 550 nanometers. So at all of the blue light spectrum and about half of the green, or three quarters of the green light spectrum suppress melatonin.
So you know that. And then if you actually look at the glasses we've created, what do they block? 400 to 550 nanometers. So we've aligned our lenses to match the research around melatonin suppression. Now, if I fast forward to a study that's come out in 2022 to say, blue eight glasses don't work.
What are they filtering? They're filtering probably 5% to 20% of blue light up to 420 nanometers, nothing past four 20. Nothing. Get the peak disruption zone of 455 nanometers. So again, the devil's in the [00:32:00] detail here around studies, around research, products exist in today's world that literally have no scientific backing or do not link back to any research around light and biology.
In today's world, that's where you've gotta be a bit careful about making conclusions based on studies you've seen. So someone could have read that study and gone, blue boxing glasses don't work. Therefore, I don't believe in any of the science of. Of light at all, because I read a piece of research and it said they're a scam and they're a waste of money and that's where I tried to go, but you've gotta look at the core research on light, not the product.
Jeffrey Feldberg: Lot of good lessons there. One of them is buyer beware. As something becomes more popular, more people get on the bandwagon, and to your point, they're producing them inexpensively. They wanna say blue blocking glasses. Well, Yes, they block blue light, but not the right spectrum of blue light. And so do your research.
Know who you're buying from. You're probably gonna pay more for quality glasses. But what's interesting, Daniel, you didn't stop at the glasses As we [00:33:00] record this today, and I know this is changing, but as we record this today, it's not just blocking the blue light you have regular lighting that you can put in your ceiling, in your lamps, in your house, and even lighting there's lots of lighting out there that says, oh, block blue light. But what they don't tell you is maybe, yeah, maybe there's no blue light coming from it, but it's flickering and the human eye, we can't see that flickering. It is going to mess up your circadian rhythm or your sleep just as much as a regular light.
But you've gone into lighting, you've gone into red light therapy, sleep masks, and the list goes on in terms of where you are and where you're going.
So what's been going on there from a health side of things, not just for entrepreneurs, but society in general, your entering these specializations in the health market when it comes to lighting, what's behind that in terms of yes okay. We started here, but why don't we create this product to go over there? What are some problems that you're seeing that go well beyond when you first began this?
Daniel Ebbett: Yeah, so I obviously started with the glasses. We were doing them for a number of years, and then I had a light bulb [00:34:00] moment, excuse the pun, but
Jeffrey Feldberg: Pun intended.
Daniel Ebbett: Yeah, where I was at home and we had just moved into a new house and suddenly all the lights in our home were LED. And you can't change the light bulbs in 'em anymore, and they're all LED.
This is a really big problem. This didn't exist when I started the business four years ago, but it's here now. and I was, what I was finding was, I had the glasses, but then I'd forget them and I would lose them or, and then my wife wouldn't wear them, and she'd just, and I'm like, it ignore.
I was like, yeah, this works. But it's really impractical and in the home where now, all of our lighting is really the wrong spectrums of light. So I thought, hey, like instead of using glasses, which is still needed in certain circumstances, how about we try and stop it at the source? The glasses are filtering the light.
What happens if the light itself just never admitted the wrong frequencies? You wouldn't need the glasses most of the time, when I say most of the time, because [00:35:00] the likes of your phone, the biggest exposure in our home is all our overhead lighting. I was also in the business of understanding light and biology. So I was like I'll work it out, I'll work out how to create lighting.
So I spent a lot of time trying to find lighting engineers and spending time going back and forward prototyping, trying to create what I call the ultimate healthy lighting system. And what you alluded to, it's not just a spectrum of light it's the modern technology and LED light sources.
What you call flicker, which is the light source turning off and on very quickly. So quick that normally the human eye actually can't see it, but what's actually happening is. In the home your main's power coming in is called it's AC power or alternating current.
And so that's because you've got your substation far away, which is, and it's delivering electricity to the homes. In order for it to get a far distance, it pulses the power down the line, and what's actually happening is that electricity has been delivered on and off very fast. It's actually, at 60 Hertz it's 120 times a second. [00:36:00] It's pulsing it. So what's happening with those diodes is they're turning off and on very quickly, and now you don't see it, but your brain is certainly seeing that and it's having to process a flickering light source.
Now, there's no such thing in nature as a flickering light source. The sun is what you call direct current or DC current. it's on and it's just, it's producing heat and light constantly. The older type of lighting, we used to have incandescent lighting, very similar to the sun. It's got inside the bulb, it's got a filament and that filament heats up, produces a ton of heat, infrared light, and light.
So it's a heat source type lighting. So whilst you've got puling electricity coming into it. But the filament doesn't just turn off because it's like a fire. It's heating up. it buffers out essentially any of the ac current coming to the home. So when we shifted to the digital light this flicker became a real big problem and the symptoms of flicker is similar to overexposure to blue [00:37:00] light.
It causes neurological stress on the brain. It rises your cortisol adrenaline puts the body into a stress response. So you've got that issue around flicker. Then you've got the LED light source having the wrong type of spectrum for night. So I was like let's try and create a flicker free blue light free light bulb.
And so that was in 2020. By the end of 2020 we had our flagship light bulb. And it was just an Edison screw in bulb that everyone could put into their homes. And start to swap out their lights in their homes so they would have a healthy light source for the evening.
When I say for the evening, because it wasn't really a daytime light source, because it didn't have blue light and everything we've talked about today is how you know how bad blue light is and how detrimental it is, but that's not actually true. It is true at nighttime or certain times of the day, but blue light is actually a very essential spectrum of light that we do need exposure to during the daytime. And if you don't get exposed to enough blue light during the daytime, you'll have a whole host of other [00:38:00] problems, which you'll feel tired. You'll feel low energy, low mood, will actually affect your sleep at nighttime as well, because the lights of full spectrum light with blue light in it, you need to get a lot of exposure to that during the daytime.
What that does is it produces serotonin and dopamine, but serotonin's are very important. Neurotransmitter. 'cause what serotonin does is in the absence of blue light at night, that's the precursor to melatonin. So that's the building blocks of the sleep on one I talked about that is secreted at night in the absence of blue light.
So if you don't have enough of the raw material that you actually produce by getting exposed to blue light during the day, natural light You can block as much blue light at night, but if you don't have the ability to create the melatonin, then well, you won't create it.
So it's why it's always not just one part. It's the whole solution. And so what I was alluding to is the light bulbs we created weren't sufficient to use during the [00:39:00] daytime, which posed its own challenges. And that's why we, as a business further evolved. So that's when we went around. Creating more what I call biologically appropriate lighting for the daytime, which is how do we introduce full spectrum light so it's got lots of blue in it, it's balanced. Like we get outdoors so we can actually keep up, up regulate our energy levels, our mood during the daytime produce lots of serotonin and dopamine.
And so then when we go into the evening and we actually then change the light to not have blue light, we can start to produce melatonin, wipe down, relax and sleep well.
We've spent the last five years evolving that, that range of lighting products and the goal we've had because we're an international business, obviously founded in New Zealand, but got deep roots now in the US, UK, Europe, Australia, Canada, the challenge with lighting is everyone's got different kind of voltages, different fittings, different light sources, but the goal of us, our business for the last five years is how can we [00:40:00] supply lighting to the home around the world where we've got a solution that will cover 90% of your lights in your home from all the different fittings to what about someone when they're traveling and they just want a portable lamp to someone that wants just to put a motion sensor and light in their bathroom so when they get up in the night.
So now we've got a whole suite of different lighting products that are really curated for different situations that we interact with light in the home.
Jeffrey Feldberg: What's a. Amazing about this in Deep Wealth Nation as we've been talking about this. As I said earlier, Daniel, your personal health journey and your business, they are intertwined. It's not one without the other, but it started with you. You were a data point of one. You turned this into passion. Hey, this helped me.
I can help other people and really respect what you're doing in terms of, okay, where can we extend, how we can help people into other areas of their lives? And what's always fascinating, the traditional incandescent light bulb, it was demonized. This is the [00:41:00] worst thing that can ever happen. It's going to ruin planet Earth as we know it.
And now we're finding, hey, you know what? Relative to the traditional LEDs that are out there, it's actually the best thing around. Maybe we shouldn't have eliminated that. And blue light, to your point. Blue Light in and of itself isn't bad. It's not evil. In fact, if we didn't have blue light, we wouldn't know when to wake up. Our body would be in chaos. We need that blue light as a signal at the right time to tell the body, Hey, stop sleeping, stop getting tired. Let's get that cortisol going in a healthy way to begin to start our day. So everything just like in nature, everything is in natural rhythms.
And my takeaway here is when we can look after ourselves through our health and take whatever steps that we need to be able to do that. It really has a ROI, return on investment in all the other areas of our lives. On the personal side, on the business side, and in your case, you took your own experimentation.
You're smart enough, okay, lemme put together some glasses, lemme put together some lights, lemme put together some red lights. And you're now taking that out to the marketplace to make a difference out there. To [00:42:00] give the real deal as opposed to something that's a cheap knockoff. It's not gonna get the results.
It has a clickbait headline, but there's really no substance behind it. It's actually the opposite. Yeah, you'll pay some more. And by the way, Deep Wealth nation. I've purchased full price Daniel's products, no favors here. I like to be objective and independent. And I gotta tell you, I've really been enjoying the lighting system and the positive changes that it's made.
Although my family still calls me weird and a freak and all those other things when they walk into a room and it's an amber color or an orange color from the ceiling lights. But you know what? It makes a difference. And more importantly, I feel the difference. And so, Daniel, when you look back on your journey, and before we go into rapid mode, when you look back into your journey, if there's one, maybe two takeaways that you can tell yourself today, the present day, Daniel, compared to what you didn't know.
When you had insomnia, you felt terrible. You couldn't get outta bed. Your thinking was scattered. You didn't have the energy. [00:43:00] You worked harder, but it got worse. Not better. What would be your big picture takeaway as you look back from where you started to where you are today?
Daniel Ebbett: The big one for me is just don't give up from trying to fix my health. So it was persistence in not giving up.
And then I would also apply that to my business as well, because in the early days there was so many times where I thought, ah, this isn't actually gonna be a thing. I should just give up. But again, it was, I think it was just a, that bigger thing of just like believing no you stay the course and believe in myself.
So I think that was my biggest takeaway from the inception of trying to fix my health to trying to grow the business to where it is today, which is a, quite a large international presence business that is a leader in the space believe in yourself and keep going.
And that's kind of what I've, continued to do over the years. And I think now it's got to a point where I'm glad I stuck at it.
Jeffrey Feldberg: And as I look back in terms of our conversation, both what we recorded, but also offline and before we go into wrap up mode. So many takeaways from me, and it's [00:44:00] really an inspiration to be speaking with you, Daniel, where you started with, Hey, I've got no idea. I don't even want to be in business. I'm gonna be the accidental entrepreneur.
I have no plans to start a business, but wow, I am coming from a situation that wasn't great. I wasn't the only one that's in that situation, but I figured out for myself it was a long journey. It wasn't easy, but now that I know how to do it, let me take that to other people. And we didn't get into all the hurdles that you had to go through and the challenges.
It was not a straight path to success because you are worldwide. You are a world leader, you're being very modest. Anyone in the health space, they know what you're doing. They know your company name, they know your products in terms of what you're doing. You're leading the space in terms of bringing easy to use, practical lighting and lights and circadian rhythm fixes.
Into the business, into the household. But you did it from, okay, how can I help other people? Because it wasn't easy for me. How can I make it easy for them? And to me, that's the heart of being an entrepreneur. We find really painful problems for other people, and [00:45:00] we solve it in a world class manner. And I know for me and Deep Wealth Nation, go to the show notes, click on the links, go to Daniel's company.
You can buy the products for your lighting as an example. There's three different modes from full Spectrum as though I'm outside and then early morning and then into a little bit later on in the evening. Could you take your light switch and push it up and down once or twice or three times? Of course you could.
And that three seconds that you took to do that's gonna make a difference of you getting the right kind of sleep, feeling better, having that clear thinking, making the better decisions and de Deep Wealth nation, when it comes time to prepare your company for an Exit. Guess what? You're gonna have the insight, the fortitude, the focus, the energy to be able to do that because you've taken care of your health, which is our first Wealth, and you leading the charge with that.
Daniel, really thank you on behalf of everyone for doing that. You're also a terrific inspiration in terms of what you can do with a business because you didn't start off in business, you had no intention [00:46:00] of being in business. You've learned along the way, but you've done some incredible things and you're a picture of success, so congratulations on that.
So we're gonna go into rapid mode. It's a tradition here on the Deep Wealth Podcast where it's my privilege and honor. I get to ask the same question. It's a really fun question to every one of the guests. Let me set this question up for you, Daniel. When you think of the movie Back to the Future, you have that magical DeLorean car that will take you to any point in time.
So I want you to imagine now it's tomorrow morning, you look outside your window, and Daniel, this is the fun part. Not only is the DeLorean car curbside, the door is open, it's waiting for you to hop on in what you do. You're now gonna go to any point in your life, Daniel, as a young child, as a teenager, whatever point in time it would be.
What would you tell your younger self in terms of life lessons or life wisdom, or, Hey Daniel, do this, but don't do that. What would it sound like?
Daniel Ebbett: that's a good question. Yeah, interesting.
What I was initially thinking of, but actually I wouldn't do this, but this is what I initially, I [00:47:00] was like, I'd go back and first of all, like back to my, when I was starting my career and give myself the knowledge so I didn't have to go through the health struggles, but I'm like, I wouldn't actually do that because that wouldn't lead to what I've done today to help people, right?
Like I went through pain and suffering to build something to help people. So that's not what I would do. A big thing I would like to go back. To a point in my, probably back into my twenties before, I would try to go back and have some influence over. So what I think the biggest problem is, and this has just been in my space and around, this doesn't actually benefit me, but it benefits the world, is we're so far gone into this, like what we talked about, the LED lighting phase, right?
It, it infiltrates everywhere now. Now I wouldn't mean everywhere. Street lights, car lights, all your, how homes, any digital device. It's all this LED light source and. And what it's streamed from is, and you kind [00:48:00] of alluded to, is like we went from incandescent, which was, and moved to this because we're trying to save the planet.
So it's all under the name of sustainability, right? So it is been pushed on to the world and it's been legislated through government where, hey, we need to have more energy efficient lighting. And so the way we create energy efficient lighting is we remove all the heat or the infrared light, which is actually the, we haven't even touched on infrared light and how beneficial that is to humans because it's emitted from the sun and it's such a restorative frequency.
So we're remove the infrared or the inefficient light out of light sources because it it doesn't produce light. It's not visible light. So it's energy inefficient and that's why we've created LED, but so we've done it in the name of sustainability, we've done it in the name of trying to look after planet Earth, but what we haven't considered through this, and it's too late.
there's no going back anymore that. We haven't considered that. Yes, technically, like lower power consumptions, better for the earth, but it's not, what we've created is something that [00:49:00] is absolutely detrimental to life on earth, right? And not just humans, every life, all animals and insects, everything is affected by this.
So if I could go back, we are trying to have some influence around, hey, just consider not only like sustainability of the earth, but consider and research about the people that live on this earth and what impact it's having on them. 'cause I'm one person here now, creating a company, creating products and solutions to try as much as possible lower the impacts of the world we live in now, the modern world of just being flooded with this artificial light source.
But it's not an, it's, it's impacting every human on its earth right now the light that we are exposed to because it's everywhere. But what we create does not help every human on this earth. So I would go back and try to have form of influence to be like, we need to actually consider at what we're doing before we just push this technology out.
Because like I said, we can't go back anymore. It's here to stay. Yeah. So that's what I would try to do again not great for my [00:50:00] business, but just doing good for planet earth and the humans on it.
Jeffrey Feldberg: My goodness, Daniel, there is so much there. And so that said, Daniel, someone in Deep Health Nation, they wanna learn more about what you're doing. The company, they wanna have a conversation, they have some questions they wanna ask, where would be the best place online to reach you?
Daniel Ebbett: Yeah. So, website is block blue light.com. So nice and simple to the point of what we do. Yeah. On the website we've got a lot of the products we've discussed, but. One of the big resources I would say, is not for someone that's new to this, not to just jump in and buy all the products.
It's probably not to, we've got massive amounts of resources. I've got like over 120 blog posts on, on our website, diving into all the different topics to allow someone to really understand the problem. And then the solution beyond that, if you don't wanna read, we've got, our support team, we're alive on chat as if you've got questions.
they've all come up through, trained by me. So, I've instilled the whole, all the concepts of, how you know someone's situation and what [00:51:00] would be the right product for them. So, I'd encourage people to jump on our website@blockbluelight.com, read a bunch of the blogs if they want to, and just reach out to us and ask questions because our team loved to help and help people certain situations and get the right products for them.
Jeffrey Feldberg: Deep Wealth Nation. It doesn't get any easier. Go to the show notes. It's a point and click. It's all there for you. Take Daniel up on his offer, read the information.
