Health Entrepreneur Jarrod Barakett: When Pain Takes Control Of Your Company And The Path Back

Health Entrepreneur Jarrod Barakett: When Pain Takes Control Of Your Company And The Path Back

What happens when the pain you thought you were carrying privately starts running the company you worked years to build?

The host of The Deep Wealth Podcast and post-exit entrepreneur Jeffrey Feldberg speaks with Jarrod Barakett, a health entrepreneur.

There is a dangerous assumption successful founders make.

We tell ourselves that whatever is happening personally can stay personal.

The grief stays at home.

The exhaustion disappears when the Zoom camera turns on.

The brain fog can be pushed through.

The betrayal can be compartmentalized.

The physical warning signs can wait until after the next quarter, the next hire, the next customer crisis, or the next financing.

Until they cannot.

That is where this conversation with Jarrod Barakett becomes much bigger than wellness.

It becomes a conversation about who is really running your company when pain, depleted energy, and unresolved pressure begin changing how you show up.

Your Company Feels What You Carry

You know the feeling.

You wake up after what should have been enough sleep, yet your mind never fully arrives.

The decision that once took ten minutes takes an hour.

You delay the difficult conversation with a key employee.

You read the same proposal three times.

You become shorter with your leadership team.

Strategy gets replaced by survival.

Nothing has technically broken, so you keep going.

That is precisely what makes the problem dangerous.

Founder health rarely announces itself on the income statement as "founder energy problem."

Instead, it can show up as decision fatigue, leadership inconsistency, slower execution, team strain, missed opportunities, and an organization becoming increasingly dependent on a founder who is operating below capacity.

Your health may feel personal.

The consequences are anything but.

When Trust Turns Into A Business Skeleton

Jarrod's story contains another warning founders will recognize immediately.

He trusted a business partner.

That partner was also family.

While Jarrod returned to Canada during COVID to be with his children, the business he had helped build collapsed underneath him.

A large part of his retirement was gone.

There are many ways to tell that story.

Jarrod chooses one that is uncomfortable.

"I preach accountability."

He refuses to make blame the center of the story.

He explains that although he could spend his life blaming the person who betrayed him, accountability means looking at his own decisions too.

That is not about excusing someone else's behavior.

It is about refusing to surrender control over what happens next.

For a founder, that distinction is enormous.

Trust is an X-Factor when it accelerates relationships, execution, and opportunity. Blind trust can become a skeleton when verification, controls, and accountability disappear.

Your biggest business risk is not always the person you distrust.

Sometimes it is the person you trust so completely that you stop checking.

The Most Important Shot Is The Next One

Jarrod brings the lesson back to his decades in golf.

"The most important shot in golf is the next one."

Founders need that sentence.

Not because yesterday does not matter.

It matters enormously.

Your mistakes contain intelligence.

Your betrayals contain warning signs.

Your failures expose systems that were weaker than you believed.

But there is a difference between extracting the lesson and living inside the loss.

Jarrod's point is that accountability changes your relationship with what happened.

If everything remains someone else's fault, someone else still controls the story.

Once you identify what was inside your control, something changes.

You regain agency over the next decision.

The next hire.

The next partnership.

The next control you install.

The next conversation you stop avoiding.

That is the path back.

Then The Body Sends A Bill

Business betrayal was not Jarrod's only collision with pain.

In 2018, he lost his 12-year-old daughter in a tragic boating accident.

Years later, another warning arrived physically.

Jarrod had spent decades pushing himself hard through sports, work, lifting, boxing, and constant activity. Eventually, severe back pain appeared.

He kept moving.

Then he began falling.

Then other symptoms appeared.

An MRI revealed severe spinal cord compression. Doctors told him he was flirting with paralysis, and emergency spinal surgery followed.

The pattern matters.

Founders are extraordinarily talented at normalizing warning signs.

We call exhaustion commitment.

We call stress ambition.

We call brain fog a busy week.

We call declining energy aging.

We call pain something we will deal with later.

Until the body removes "later" from the available options.

Health Is Not Separate From Enterprise Value

Here is the only in Deep Wealth reframe.

Founder health is not simply a wellness issue.

It is business infrastructure.

Think like a future buyer for a moment.

A buyer is not only evaluating your revenue, margins, customers, or intellectual property.

They are evaluating risk.

What happens when the founder is unavailable?

Can the leadership team execute independently?

Does decision quality collapse when the founder is exhausted?

Has the business been built around sustainable leadership capacity, or around one person repeatedly overriding the warning lights?

Founder dependency already creates enterprise value risk.

Founder dependency combined with declining founder capacity magnifies it.

You may intend to keep your thriving and profitable business forever or sell it tomorrow.

Either way, you need the capacity to lead it today.

Brain Fog Has A Business Cost

Jarrod describes his own experience simply:

"Everything just seems easier."

He talks about clearer speech, easier conversations, more energy, better interactions, and recovering his ability to operate after enormous personal and physical adversity.

His path led him into wellness technology and eventually to becoming president of The Light System. In the conversation, Jarrod discusses the company's technology and the experiences he attributes to using it.

Those claims are his experience and perspective, and this episode is not medical advice. Any health decision belongs in a conversation with an appropriate medical professional.

But founders do not need to accept every theory discussed in the episode to confront the larger question.

What is your current level of energy costing your company?

Look at your calendar.

Look at the decisions you are postponing.

Look at the conversations you no longer have the patience to hold.

Look at how you behave with your team at 4:30 in the afternoon compared with 9:00 in the morning.

Look at what happens at home after the business has consumed whatever capacity you had left.

There may be a larger cost hiding there than you realize.

The Founder Is Part Of The Operating System

Founders obsess over systems.

CRM systems.

Financial systems.

Hiring systems.

Sales systems.

Operating systems.

Yet we routinely ignore the biological system running all of them.

The founder.

If your judgment deteriorates, the company feels it.

If your patience disappears, culture feels it.

If your energy collapses, execution feels it.

If your health forces you out suddenly, every dependency you tolerated becomes visible at once.

That does not mean a founder needs perfect health.

It means pretending founder capacity has nothing to do with company performance is a dangerous strategy.

Deep Wealth Mastery Health starts from this principle: your health is your first wealth because leadership capacity creates business capacity.

Protecting the founder is not indulgence.

It is risk management.

Accountability Creates The Path Back

Perhaps the most important part of Jarrod's story has nothing to do with technology.

It is the refusal to surrender responsibility for what comes next.

"You have to be 100% accountable."

That philosophy carried him through betrayal.

It helped frame his response to devastating personal loss.

It shaped how he thinks about health.

And it creates an uncomfortable question for every founder listening.

What have you normalized that you already know needs attention?

Maybe it is brain fog.

Maybe your energy disappears halfway through the day.

Maybe stress is following you home.

Maybe your team has learned to read your mood before bringing you bad news.

Maybe the business cannot function without you, yet the way you are currently operating is making that dependency harder to sustain.

You do not need shame.

You need awareness followed by action.

Because the founder who takes responsibility for the next move still has options.

What’s In It For You?

Jarrod Barakett's story moves through business success, betrayal, unimaginable grief, physical danger, recovery, accountability, and the challenge of rebuilding capacity.

The value is not in copying his path.

It is in asking what his path exposes about yours.

Pain does not need permission to enter your company.

Neither does exhaustion.

Neither does brain fog.

The question is whether you recognize what is happening while you still have choices.

Because the expensive founder problems are rarely the obvious ones. They begin as small signals, normalized behaviors, overlooked skeletons, and decisions you assume can wait.

The Deep Wealth Podcast is designed to surface those signals before they become expensive.

And if you want to go deeper into building the health, leadership capacity, profitability, scalability, and enterprise value that allow you to remain profitable now and ready later, that is exactly where the Deep Wealth Operating System begins.
